’blowfly’ was born at south burloo, our hilltop estate outside coonabarabran that overlooks the volcanic remnants of the warrumbungle mountains. our property takes its name from the aboriginal word ’burloo’meaning ’place of many flies’, which given the decidedly average number of flies there, could be somewhat misleading. so, why blowfly? while few would venture to champion this humble australian icon, leave vanity to the butterfly, we say, the real answer is a question of taste.
we established our vineyard in 1998, planting 10 hectares of chambourcin, merlot, petit verdot and shiraz. we employ an advanced, non-mechanical and highly intensive (fanatical, in cases) approach to vineyard practices, which includes harvesting all our grapes by hand... at night. from the outset, we were convinced that the coonabarabran area, with its ancient volcanoes, possessed unique climate and soil conditions which could produce exceptional, complex wines. now, together with winemaker ken borchardt, consultant CP Lin, and an off-the-wall fly, we aim to convince everyone else.
